The Slovak Republic Ministry of Agriculture effective 31st of December 2005 abolished individual legal subjectivity as legal persons for the semi-budget organizations:
- Forest Research Institute (FRI)
- Forestproject Zvolen
- Institution for Nurture and Education of workers of the forest and aquatic agriculture of the Slovak Republic
and in their place on January 1st 2006 created a new organization: National Forest Centre (NFC) in full extent of a legal successor.
Zvolen has been the town of forestry in Slovakia for decardes and currently bears the title of "The town of forestry". It is here that since 1964 resided the Forest Research Institute. Forestproject Zvolen had resided here since 1950 and the Institution for Nurture and Education of workers of the forest and aquatic agriculture of the Slovak Republic which was founded in 1978.
On the 1st of January 2006 these three forestry organizations merged into the National Forest Centre a vytvorili inštitúciu, ktorá spojila lesnícku vedu, výskum, poradenstvo, vzdelávanie a lesnícku prax. Národné lesnícke centrum v súčasnostitvoria tri ústavy:
- Národné lesnícke centrum – Lesnícky výskumný ústav Zvolen (LVÚ Zvolen),
- Národné lesnícke centrum – Ústav lesných zdrojov a informatiky (ÚLZI Zvolen),
- Národné lesnícke centrum – Ústav pre hospodársku úpravu lesov Zvolen (ÚHÚL Zvolen).
Tie dopĺňajú dve odborné centrá:
- Centrum transferu poznatkov a lesnej pedagogiky,
- Znalecké centrum.

Rok 2018 bol pre Národné lesnícke centrum jubilejný, jeho dva ústavy NLC – LVÚ Zvolen a NLC – ÚLPV Zvolen (v súčasnosti Centrum transferu poznatkov a lesnej pedagogiky) oslávili významné výročia, 120 rokov lesníckeho výskumu a 40 rokov celoživotného vzdelávania v lesníctve Slovensku.
Od roku 1968 sídli lesnícky výskum v budove na ulici T. G. Masaryka 22 vo Zvolene, ktorá slúži zamestnancom lesníckeho výskumu a terajšiemu ústrediu NLC už viac ako 50 rokov. Ďalšie ústavy NLC – ÚLZI Zvolen a NLC – ÚHÚL Zvolen, ako aj Centrum transferu poznatkov a lesnej pedagogiky a Znalecké centrum majú svoje sídla na Ulici Sokolská 2 vo Zvolene.
The National Forestry Centre (NFC) in accordance with the founding list provides complex resort tasks in the areas of:
- forestry science and research
- forest management planning
- complex surveillance of the state of forests and planning
- planning of protection of forests and forestry activities
- selection of the makers or the programme for care for forests
- information systems LH
- thematic state maps with the content of LH
- nurture and education in LH
- consulting activities
- contact with the public
- communication strategy of forestry agriculture on a national level
Detailed outline of activities:
- ensures research and innovation in all areas of forestry and its related fields
- functions as a coordination workplace for research and innovation tasks in LH
- conducts work in research projects as part of its activities based on requests from national and international agencies and research programmes of the EU
- ensures international research and technical cooperation
- ensures transformation of findings of science and practice
- creates conditions for gaining the statute of excellent research centers
- publishes scientific-research and expert newspapers
- to the full extent conducts tasks of a legal person created by MP SR in accordance with laws and regulations published by it
- ensures the development of forest management planning, methods and approaches to its conduct
- in tandem with the state coordinates activities of persons creating forestry agriculture plans
- ensures the selection of the creator of PSL and has overview over the process and quality of its creation
- conducts monitoring of the health of forests
- conducts national inventory of forests and monitoring of forests and the state of forest ecosystems
- ensures complex surveillance of the state of forests for the needs of planning and rating the state and development of forests
- ensures creation, publishing and archiving of thematic state maps with the content of LH
- ensures creation and processing of information systems of forest agriculture
- has oversight over the information systems of LH and its information banks
- ensures the functioning of the Forestry market information systems
- ensures surveillance and processing of data for the state management of forest agriculture
- creates the basics for working on projects altering the land
- conducts activities in the field of forest protection and seeding
- processes suggestions of law directives to the extend of the subject of the activities
- is tasked with representing Slovakia in international institutions and organizations
- ensures tasks of the National certification centre
- ensures training and education of workers in LH and its branches
- ensures advisory function to the extend of the activities
- ensures scientific and specialized training
- conducts expertly, reviewing, expertise, managing, educational, library, informational, editorial and propagation functions
- in accordance with universally binding laws conducts entrepreneurial functions
