Moving National Forest Inventory Practices to Three-dimensional Space by Ground-based LIDAR / 3DNFI

Project implement ground-based lidar technologies in the Slovak NFI. Such implementation must be tested and evaluated thoroughly from multiple perspectives. We need to cover the fieldwork/data acquisition, pre-processing and processing, evaluation of the methods and creation of the whole pipeline from the fieldwork to the final report and documents needed for NFI. Then work on the international dissemination and exploitation of the whole product. And very importantly to create a training program to train foresters to use this technology in the field and in the office as well. The whole project is divided into five Work Packages: Field Campaign, Processing solution, Operational standards, Capacity Building and Knowledge Transfer. Currently, there is no NFI around the world, that has done such implementation in practice. We are aware of three European research teams that are in a similar initial phase. These are teams from the University of Oviedo, the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest Snow and Landscape Research WSL and the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE).
